Roswell Wrecks Pope's Playoff Hopes
Tuesday, 14 April 2009
The Boys Varsity fell
to Roswell 3-2 on Tuesday night. Goals by Mark Gabriel and Sean Pinto were not
enough to prevent Roswell from unseating the Greyhounds from the playoff picture.
Earlier in the evening the Lady Greyhounds lost 1-0 to the Hornets. In addition
to the photos Ron Richard has been taking all season long, here is a link to some
photos of the varsity matches at Roswell: http://www.kentsfotos.com/Metro-Atlanta%20High%20School%20Soccer

Greyhounds again controlled the game for much of the second half with a strong
Team defense effort. Keepers Sarah Rose and Emily Paris combined for their 6th
shutout of the season. The JV Girls finished the season 7-3-2 with a 4-1-2 region
record. Also on Monday, the JV Boys fell to Roswell by a score of 2-1. Lucas Lindenlaub

Walton Woes
Wednesday, 01 April 2009
Two hard fought battles ended in the closing
minutes with wins for Walton. The Lady Greyhounds allowed the winning goal with
approximately two and a half minutes remaining to fall 1-2 to the Raiders. The
Boys took an early 2-0 lead with goals from Mark Gabriel and Sean Pinto and then
held the lead for more than sixty-five minutes before Walton was on the board with
a PK. Another score with less than ten minutes remaining pushed the match into
overtime. With no scoring in overtime, the teams lined up for a shootout. Walton
prevailed 3-2 in PKs to claim the victory.
Senior Night Success
Tuesday, 31 March 2009
The Lady Greyhounds
kicked off Senior Night with a 5-0 victory over region
opponent Kell. The game was dedicated to long time Greyhound soccer supporter
Mike Marchant who is battling cancer. [Next Action: Home on Wednesday, April
1 @ 5:30 vs. Walton] The Boys Varsity followed with a 3-1 victory. Kell started
the scoring about midway through the first half. Pope waited until 1:30 to even
the score when GK Sam Eichenblatt's punt bounded over the Longhorn defense. Mark
Gabriel was able to corral it and cross it for Sean Pinto to finish. Less than
five minutes into the second half Mark Gabriel was once again able to cross the
ball for Collin McNew's redirection into the net. Finally, with only 2:30 remaining
in the match, Gabe Pinto pushed the ball through the center of the Kell defense
where Tony Benedetto took over and fought to keep his feet and the ball until
he cleanly placed it in the goal for the final 3-1 score.
JV Quells Kell

The Lady Greyhounds
registered their fifth shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over visiting Kell.
The team's first goal was put in by Becca Kanaverskis on a wonderful cross by
Kelly Williams. The score stayed at 1-0 until early in the 2nd half until Lauren
Clapper centered a corner kick for a header goal by Danielle Dillon. Sarah Rose
finished off the scoring late in the 2nd half on a nice assist by Maya Barcelli.
[Next Action: Home on Monday, April 13 @ 7:00 vs. Roswell] The Boys JV also recorded

Friday, 20 March 2009
Both varsity teams traveled to
Wheeler on Friday night and defeated the Wildcats 4-0. The Lady Greyhound victory
was behind the strength of scoring by Emily Gaid, Ryann Davie, Hanna Holmquist
and Kelly Reilly. The Boys waited until the second half to begin their scoring.
In the first minute, Sean Pinto played a ball through to Mark Gabriel for the
score. Then Scott Mackenzie sent a ball forward for Sean Pinto who went 1 on
1 with the GK. Just inside fourteen minutes remaining Mark Gabriel placed a free
kick in front of the keeper and Matt Broshar "cleaned up" by putting
it over the goal line. Finally, Mark Gabriel broke free
to challenge the keep and secure the score at 4-0.
Wild Finish Against Wildcats
Thursday, 19 March 2009
With
a mere sixteen seconds left in the match Emanuel Ruiz
found the back of the net to lift the Boys JV to a 3-2 victory over the Wheeler
Wildcats. The play began with a quick throw-in by Mitch Burns to Gabe Pinto who
then played the ball into the middle of the penalty area for Ruiz. About eight
minutes earlier Wheeler had evened the score at 2-2 when Pope failed to clear
the ball from in front of their own net. Scoring in the first half included Ruiz
passing to Pinto for a nice shot past the keeper as well as David Smith curling
a shot into the goal from deep in the left corner. [Next Action: Home on Saturday,
March 21 @ 1:30 vs. Milton] Earlier in the evening the Lady JV Greyhounds played
another solid match against a pesky Wheeler Wildcat team. Lesley Pedersen started
the scoring 10 minutes in to the game on a header off a corner kick by Lauren
Clapper. The Wildcats anwsered a bit later to even the score at 1-1. The Lady
Greyhounds controlled the tempo in the second half but the game ended in a tie.
Pope Picks Up The Pace
Tuesday, 17 March 2009
Pope's BV
rebounded on Tuesday at the Hound Pound with a 7-2 victory against Pace Academy.
Scott Mackenzie broke the ice in the sixth minute by placing a rebound from a
long throw-in into the back of the net. About eight minutes later Pace Academy
scored twice within a minute, taking a 2-1 advantage. In the last fifteen minutes
of the half Pope rattled off five scores. A restart by Connor McCubrey found
the head of Sean Pinto to even the match. Shortly after, David Levinson also
crossed the ball to Sean Pinto's head to take the lead for good. A.J. Weiner
worked the ball deep before passing back to Mark Gabriel for a score. Sean Pinto
then made it a hat trick for the evening. Before the half ended, Mark Gabriel
intercepted a goal kick and played it directly back into the net for a 6-2 lead.
Finally, with less than three minutes remaining in the match, Connor McCubrey
played a long ball to Collin McNew's feet. McNew turned, took a few touches,
and shot the ball on the ground into the far corner of the net.
Lack Of Goals Against Lassiter
Friday, 13 March 2009

fall short against Lassiter. On Thursday evening the JV teams traveled to Lassiter

Lady Greyhounds quickly regrouped, took the ball downfield and Cristina Vargas
put the ball in the back of the net. Afterwards the Boys JV lost 2-4 with goals
scored by Lucas Lindenlaub and Mitch Burns. [Next Action: GJV Away on Saturday,
March 14 @ 3:00 at Salem HS in Conyers, BJV Home on Monday, March 16 @ 5:30 vs.
Roswell] On Friday, the Trojans visited Pope where the GV failed to tally a score
and lost 0-3. The BV saw Mark Gabriel even the score at 1-1 on a ball played
forward by Collin McNew, but Lassiter scored in the second half and held on to
win 2-1.

were credited to Kelly Reilly and Emily Gaid. In the first minute of the second
half Caitlin Walsh scored on a long free kick from roughly twenty-five yards
out. Centennial put on some pressure by scoring twice in the last fifteen minutes,
but the Girls controlled the ball enough to even their region record at 2-2.
The second match found the Boys Varsity falling to Centennial after the Knights
pulled even at 2-2 with a goal at 44 seconds remaining in the game. Overtime

for a goal into the open net. Finally, David Levinson aggressively pursued a
ball off the keeper for the fourth goal of the half. In the second half, Josh
Belyea and A. J. Weiner both scored off expertly played balls from Dan Kueggeman
