2010 Pope Soccer Gets Off to a Great Start!
Last night, both Pope Varsity teams won their matches against Riverwood HS.
At 5:00, the girls team, led by Kelly Reilly and Ryan Davie with 2 goals each,
secured a 7-0 win. Additional goals were scored by Hannah Holmquist, Madison
Zinsenheim and Andrea Richard. After a halftime lead of 2-0, the Lady Greyhounds
poured it on in the second half with great combination play and solid defense.
All night long, the charges by the Riverwood girls were held off by a determined
defense and the Hounds kept feeding the goal scoring machine on the transition.
Conditioning seems to have paid off as the ladies wore down their opponents
and secured a great first win.
At the 7:00 game, the Varsity Boys, led by 2 scores from freshman Zack McCown,
held off a late surge from a determined Riverwood squad to win 4-3. Lucas Lindenlaub
got the Hounds off to a fast start on a beautiful run from the back followed
by another great run from David Levinson. The hounds took a 2-0 lead into the
half. After the half, Zach McCown scored his first of 2 goals from an assist
by Eric Richard. The Hounds gave one back to Riverwood on a PK awarded against
the Pope GK, Daniel Williams, that took 3 tries to get right. David Levinson's
strike across the Riverwood net found Zach McCown's foot for the 4th goal of
the night for Pope. 2 Late scores for Riverwood made the score closer than
the contest.
All in all, it was a great first night of soccer for both programs. Congratulations
to the players, coaches and parents who braved the cold together.
