Heartbreak: Pope Girls’ Varsity Thoroughly Outplays Riverwood but Lose in Penalty Kicks (Penalty Kicks 3-1 (Riverwood); Final Score 2-1 (Riverwood)
Soccer can be a cruel game. Total domination does not always lead to victory. On Friday night, the Pope Girls’ Varsity learned this tough lesson. Despite outshooting their outmatched region opponents 20 to 3 over eighty minutes of regulation time and ten tense minutes of overtime, Pope eventually lost the game in penalty kicks as the Riverwood goalie came up with several key saves.
As is their custom, Pope controlled the possession and the field from the moment the national anthem ended and the opening whistle signaled the start of play. Making her first start of the year, co-captain Randi Schroedel and her fellow mid-fielders Alex Grace, Belle Geiger, and Alexa Moore quickly seized control of the midfield. Crisp, accurate passes found open Greyhounds moving forward towards the Riverwood goal and backwards to relieve pressure. Overlapping runs by Rachel Aldridge and Kathryn Schreck placed pressure on the Riverwood back line, and Taylor Meneide constantly harassed the Riverwood center backs. Firmly in control, it was just a matter of time before the first goal was scored.
Unfortunately, against the run of play, Riverwood struck first in the sixth minute. Riverwood’s midfield played a long ball down the right side that was expertly covered by Hailey Johnston. Johnston, teamed with Noelle Best, appeared to shut down any potential danger. However, Pope was unable to clear the ball as it squirted towards an open Riverwood player at the eighteen. Sizing up the Pope goal, the Riverwood midfielder trailing the play lofted a shot that just eluded the outstretched hands of goalie Blair Shortland. Riverwood’s first and only shot of the first half found them on top 1-0.
To their credit, the Greyhounds reacted with concentrated fury constantly threatening the Riverwood goal. Goodwin Brown, Taylor Meneide, Alex Grace, Randi Schroedel and Parker Schroedel, and peppered the Riverwood goal with shots. To her credit, the Riverwood keeper was up to the task. Despite outshooting their opponents 7 to 1 in the first half, Pope could not find the equalizer.
After making several key halftime adjustments, Pope opened the second half with renewed purpose. In the forty-third minute, a seemingly routine throw-in eventually turned into the tying goal. At the mid-field line, Goodwin Brown threw the ball into Taylor Meneide. A strong diagonal pass found Kathryn Schreck on the left side. Threading the needle, Schreck found a streaking Alex Grace who beat both the Riverwood center back and goalie to the ball. As the Riverwood players picked themselves off the ground, the ball was in the back of the net, and the game was tied 1-1.
Pope continued its dominating play for the remainder of the second half. Two corner kicks found Jamie Glover’s head. The Riverwood goalie stretched to save the first, and the second just went over the cross bar. Outshooting Riverwood 9 to 0 in the second half, the go-ahead goal remained elusive. The regulation whistle sounded, and the game was still tied. Despite continuing the onslaught in both overtime periods, the winning goal was just not to be. The game would be decided by penalty kicks.
In a test of wills, both the Riverwood goalie and our own Natalia Icen showed tremendous athletic ability. After Riverwood made their first two penalty shots, Icen stopped the next two. Alex Grace made her shot, and after a few saves by the Riverwood goalie, Riverwood needed to make its last shot to win. Guessing correctly, Icen had the shot covered, but the ball somehow found its way below her as it trickled into the net: A frustrating end to a frustrating night.
Despite the loss, the Greyhound nation should be proud of the determination and fight the Girls’ Varsity displayed. All their goals still remain in front of them. Come join the team in their next game on March 11th when they welcome regional foe Osborne to the Hound Pound.

JV Boys vs Heritage
Pope vs. Heritage Conyers
Score 0 – 0
Begrudgingly Pope Settles For A Draw Against Heritage;
Pope 0 Heritage 0
None - seventeen shots during the match produced eight shots on goal.
1st half- The half opened with both sides playing evenly. At the four minute mark Heritage took a long shot that was not a serious threat. From that point Pope began to increase the pressure. With good team play Pope created scoring opportunities around the 12th minute of the match when #2 Garrett Lones tested the goalie with a direct kick and a few moments later on a well-placed corner by #14 Henry Purdy.
2nd half - From the onset of the half until the final whistle the offense continuously applied pressure to Heritage’s defense by generating 12 shots, while the Pope defense put a lid on the opponent by not allowing any serious challenges. Though the boys played a one-sided match in the second half, we regrettably were not fortunate enough to locate the back of the net.
