Girls’ Varsity Escape Creekview with 2-1 Win
The Greyhounds needed a win on Wednesday night to set themselves up to play for a Regional Championship against Northview on Friday night. The conditions were not ideal: the weather was cold and windy, the field was muddy and pockmarked, and unbelievably, the balls were not properly inflated. Displaying the characteristics of a tough-minded team, the Girls’ Varsity narrowly escaped the upset-minded Creekview Grizzlies.
Displaying total domination in the first half that belied what would become somewhat of a nail biter, Pope outshot Creekview 13-0. Freshman Goalie Natalia Icen did not have much to do with the ball and possession consistently in the Creekview final third. When the ball somehow found its way to midfield, center backs Hailey Johnston and Noelle Best distributed the ball to open players on both wings. Randi and Parker Schroedel continued their midfield mastery, and Alex Grace, Lauren Wilson, and Kathryn Schreck placed immediate and sustained pressure on the Creekview back line. Pope Corner kicks and free kicks found open Greyhounds in the penalty area time and time again. Hailey Johnston found herself on the end of a Schreck corner, but her header was blocked. Jamie Glover found herself on the end of a free kick, but her shot just missed wide. Finally, in the thirty-sixth minute, the second of rapid succession of corner kicks found the back of the goal. Placing the ball on the back post, Kathryn Schreck found her corner in the back of the net when the Creekview defender misplayed the bounce. Entering halftime, Pope completely dominated, but only led 1-0.
To their credit, Creekview ferociously fought back in the first 12 minutes of the second half. All nine of their shots occurred during this time and eventually, one shot was the equalizer. After Pope was unable to clear the ball, some nifty dribbling and a hard shot past a diving Icen knotted the score at 1. Yet, with all the momentum on Creekview’s side, Pope did not panic. Making a few on-field adjustments, Pope clawed back and reasserted its dominance on the field. In the sixty-fourth minute, Schreck beat the outside back and crossed the ball to Alexa Moore. Straining to reach the ball, Moore leaped from her feet and put her head right on the ball directing it towards fellow teammate Alex Grace. Grace headed the ball over the keeper and Pope regained the lead. The collective efforts of Rachel Aldridge, Sydney Meador, Randi Schroedel, Belle Geiger, and Hailey Johnston prevented any further attacks from threatening the Pope goal.
With the Creekview game now in the rear view mirror, the Girls’ Varsity can turn their attention to Northview. The task at hand is simple: With a win, the team captures the Regional Championship. With a loss (due to losing the tiebreaker to Riverwood), the team drops to third in the region. With so much at stake, it will be important for the entire Greyhound Nation to make the road trip. We hope to see you at the game.
